What to Expect From…
Psychotherapy:
There is a lot of significant scientific research pointing to the fact that psychodynamic psychotherapy is an excellent primary or adjunct treatment for many psychiatric conditions. There are no guarantees about what will happen in therapy. For therapy to be most successful, you will have to work hard and dig deep within your emotional self. Sometimes, after a session you may feel worse than when you came in. This is part of the process, and should be expected. At times you may not want to come in for your therapy session, which is an indicator that you really should come in, since you may be subconsciously or even consciously trying to avoid facing something that would be beneficial to explore. Often, you will have to bring up and face uncomfortable and even painful feelings. Since psychotherapy is a process, just like physical exercise, it will take time for you to do the work and start seeing results in your life. Hence, you should not expect an instant, and painless cure. You will get out of your psychotherapy, what you put into it. I will review further details of how psychodynamic psychotherapy works, and my role in the process.
Medications:
My purpose is to provide exception care. While the primary modality of your treatment will likely be psychotherapy, I may find that medications may be helpful to your treatment. In that case, I will bring up this matter with you, and both of us will discuss whether medications are the right choice for you. If you feel that you need medications, you may bring it up with me as well. However, the final decision whether to prescribe medications or not, is up to my professional opinion. Since I should be well acquainted with you and your health prior to offering medications, please do not expect to be prescribed any medications during your first few appointments with me.
If medication is indicated, I will discuss with you the reasons for suggesting a medication, and the likelihood of improvement with and without medications. I will also explain any reasonable alternative treatments which have not been tried and explain why they should be tried first. Furthermore, I will explain the type of medication you are being recommended, the dosage and frequency of administration, including possible and/or probable side effects that may occur. I will also explain the necessity for adherence to the medication treatment, and the possible withdrawal that may occur if a medication is not taken regularly, or stopped abruptly against medical advice.
